Maryland sent me a title for a car I don't own. Or maybe I DO own it, now.

I have a 2002 VW. I received the title for it in the mail, and the following day, received an additional title in the mail for a 201o VW. It has the same title number as mine. It has a different VIN, body style, etc. It's my name on the title, though. No lien holder, either.

I called the DMV and told them what had happened, and the woman told me I'd need to bring it in. When I mentioned that I didn't fancy taking a 3hr lunch and driving 30 miles to the DMV to wait in line and turn in a title for a mistake they made, she informed me that this was the only way to correct the problem.

I wouldn't actually do the following, but I could probably report "my" car stolen right now couldn't I.

Hey we messed up. Wanna waste half your day doing something you don't want to do?

Great.

Is your name on it? If not, take it to a title loan place and
max out that loan.

It sounds like the MVA messed up. Good luck getting a straight story out of them. Annapolis one is usually the best one around, but they are consistent 60% of the time.

Doesn't have my name on it does it? I actually did own a 2002 VW, not a 2010 though (and I live in MD obviously).

Ridiculous that they want you to spend your afternoon taking care of it (because let's face it, you can't just "pop in" to the DMV). Not surprising though.

I thought about destroying it, but then what if the car ends up not having a title at all? I guess I'll store it for a while, but I'm not driving to the DMV. Blech.

Maybe you should ask steve lehto if you legally own it or not

Honestly the paperwork says it's yours, technically it's yours. if you want to not waste your day you might want to mail it in.

Mail it in certified with receipt signature. Then you're divested of it.

Phuck that drive. If they want it back, they can come and get it. Or you can tell them you "lost it" and make them reissue the damn thing.

With proof of ownership (i.e. a title in your name), you could get keys made at a dealer. Then it might be possible to do a title search and find the previous registered address for your new car.

Not that I would EVER suggest doing this. Even with my messed-up morality system, that wouldn't be ballin' dawg.

I hadn't thought of that. I feel like this would be a fun social experiment on how far one could use this mistake by the DMV to be nefarious without actually being nefarious. I'm too much a conformist to do it, though.
